GOVERNMENT-MANDATED PROJECT LABOR AGREEMENTS WOULD KEEP THREE-QUARTERS OF FIRMS FROM BIDDING ON NEW FEDERAL PROJECTS, SURVEY FINDS

Survey of Federal Contractors Also Finds that the Biden Administration’s Plans to Impose Project Labor Agreements Will Make It Harder for Firms to Subcontract with Small, Minority & Disadvantaged Businesses

Nearly three-quarters of federal contractors report they will stop bidding on federal projects if the Biden administration were to follow through on its plans to impose government-mandated project labor agreements according to the results of a survey of firms released today by the Associated General Contractors of America. The survey also found that the federal mandate will make it harder for contractors to partner with small, veteran, minority or disabled-owned firms.

Update on OCA Labor Contracts - May 31, 2022

OCA’s new heavy highway agreements with the Carpenters, Cement Masons, Laborers, and Teamsters are now at the printers for final editing and printing. Once complete, the printer will provide OCA with a PDF version, which we will post on our website in both the “Breaking News” section at the bottom of the home page, and in the Labor & Employment Law” resources section. If you would like to obtain copies of the small, printed contract books, please contact Mark Potnick, and advise him how many you would like to have. We will be printing the hard-copy contract booklets only upon individual orders and will not be keeping them in stock as we have done in past years. If you have any questions, please contact Mark Potnick in the OCA office.

Sixty-four Percent of Highway Contractors Experienced Cars Crashing into their Work Zone during the Past Year, New Data Finds

Sixty-four percent of highway contractors report that motor vehicles had crashed into their construction work zones during the past year, putting motorists and workers at risk, according to the results of a new highway work zone study conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America and HCSS. In response, officials urged drivers to slow down and remain alert while passing through work zones during the summer driving season.

“The men and women of the construction industry are frequently working just a few feet, and sometimes inches, away from speeding vehicles,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist and author of the annual survey. “Drivers who are too often distracted, speeding and/or under-the-influence crash into those work zones, putting workers and themselves at risk of serious harm and death.”
